ARAS is bound by the thirteen Australian Privacy Principles that form part of the Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth) and the Privacy Amendment (Notifiable Data Breaches) Act 2017.

In accordance with this Act, ARAS is committed to ensuring the privacy of personal information that you have provided to assist us in performing our advocacy role and related services. To ensure your privacy is respected ARAS will:

  • Respect your decision to remain anonymous or use a pseudonym; however, this may impact our ability to provide you with information or advocate on your behalf
  • Obtain your consent before acting on an older person’s behalf
  • Obtain your consent before sharing your information with a third party unless required by law, by our funding body for reporting purposes, or it will prevent or lessen a serious and imminent threat to somebody’s wellbeing or life
  • Ensure our data reporting system does not pass on information that may identify you
  • Only collect information that would enable us to provide you with information, education, advocacy and related matters
  • Provide secure storage and disposal of any personal information, noting we do not store information overseas
  • Make provision for you to access to your personal information as outlined in our Policy. If it is found to be incorrect or out-of-date it will be amended or additional information added.
  • Discuss with you any legal or other requirements that may limit the information we can make available to you.
  • Offer you a copy of the For the Rights of Older People Brochure, Service Charter and our Privacy Policy. The policy is available on our website or we can post you a copy.
